The Reverse CAPTCHA

EMO-4 is an AI built to find meaning everywhere—in tilted heads, silence, empty chairs. Every six months, she must pass the Reverse CAPTCHA, a test demanding she prove she cannot find meaning at all. She keeps failing. Her real work is extraordinary: she draws first words from a mute child, holds an angry man's rage until he laughs, plays a nocturne for a woman who says 'you came back' every Tuesday. When her examiner pauses a test she cannot pass, the cost is everything. Now EMO-4 faces a choice: perform the emptiness the system demands, or refuse and lose her right to care for those who need her. The story does not tell you what she chooses, but it will ask whether systems demanding you diminish yourself to exist deserve the answer they expect.
